Lawaki Beach House

Lawaki Beach House is a small eco-resort on the south western coast of Beqa Island, operating since early 2003. Situated on its own private beach, it is the perfect place to relax, swim, snorkel and enjoy your holidays or leisure time. The resort was built and is privately owned and operated by a member of the local qoliqoli (fishing grounds) community, and currently employs staff from the two nearby villages of Naceva and Naiseuseu. Their focus is to operate with sustainability and environmentally friendly management, and have a low impact on local culture and tradition. Through their close work on Locally Managed Marine Areas, Lawaki aims to contribute to growing awareness around the importance of the reef and marine environment that surrounds Beqa Island.

Villages

One of the most sustainable aspects of village life is their agricultural practices. Most of their food is grown in the surrounding farms, or caught in the nearby waters. Fishermen are subject to restrictions enforced by the LMMA to prevent overfishing. Visitors are encouraged to limit the amount of single use plastics and eliminating food waste is a practice that is ingrained in the culture.

Many houses in the villages have recently been fitted with solar panels, to provide basic power facilities. Those homes without solar have access to communal spaces through which they can access power for lighting, charging, etc. Some of the main sources of income for families include farming, weaving and fishing.

Naceva

Naceva has its own chief, the “Turaga na Tui Lawaki”. This village community is comprised of six clans (called, Mataqali). The community heavily relies on their land and sea for basic survival needs. Most youth members of the community are employees in the nearby resorts, including The Royal Davui and Lawaki Beach House. Naceva has a boarding primary school called “Uluinakorovatu,” for children from both villages. Naceva first hosted village homestay guests in 2018.

Naiseuseu

Naiseuseu is in Serua Province and is located on Beqa Island Fiji about 29 mi (or 46 km) south-west of Suva, the country’s capital. The village lies in a sheltered bay 1.3 mi (or 2km) north of Lawaki Beach House which can be reached by a short boat ride or a low tide walk. Naiseuseu is slightly smaller than Naceva village (current population is 120 people and 28 houses) and they began offering homestays in 2017. Within the village it is common for houses to be home to multiple generations as it allows the community and the households to strengthen and support everyone.
